New apartment, new art studio space

Friday, August 6th, 2010

I’m getting pretty well settled into my new place in Bay View. The great thing about this apartment is that it has a formal dining room which I am using as my office/studio space. This weekend I did a major organizational project in there and I’m so happy with the results. My art supplies were kind of strew about and since the square footage isn’t huge I decided the only way to go was up. So I bought a 3 foot by 6 foot tall shelving unit. Now all my craft and art supplies are in one spot and it’s amazing! It’s a vast improvement from my last apartment which I just had a small dinette space for my studio space.

I also attempted to get Martha Stewart-y by labeling all my plastic containers! Ladies if you’re reading this, I think the next craft day should be at my place.

Lovin’ Spoonflower

Monday, May 17th, 2010

I recently discovered the awesome website, Spoonflower while reading one of my favorite blogs how about orange. Jessica Jones, the author of this blog is such a talented designer and I was totally in awe that she designs textiles too, something I’ve always been interested in. I was thinking about sending her some fan mail asking her about how she got into that, but then I saw on her FAQ’s page she already answered that question. She mentioned Spoonflower as a resource to use if you want to try printing some of your own designs digitally.

Of course I checked out the site to see how much it costs to get some of your own fabric made. It ranges, but is about $18/yard for basic quilting fabric. Well then I also saw that they hold weekly design contests (I sense new obsession!). This week they have a 50s style design contest so of course I had to try to come up with something. I think this will be a great way for me to test the waters on doing textile design, then maybe I will get something printed when I’ve had more practice.

This was what I submitted, it’s inspired by something you might find in the background of a 50s cartoon:

spring felt fever

Since spring is almost around the corner I decided it was time to put up my felt easter egg ornaments. My mom had an easter tree with little wooden easter eggs when we were kids so that was my inspiration. I got the branch and white vase from Michaels for around $8. Super cute!

love and order

Last year for Valentines Day I made my boyfriend a card that had a picture of 80’s band Loverboy on it and it said “Happy Valentines Day, lover boy”. That went over pretty well so I knew this year I had to come up with something just as good. He’s a huge fan of Law and Order SVU so I did cartoons of detectives Benson and Stabler. Ok so they’re not really romantically involved on the show, but those unrequited tv relationships are sometimes the best. I should probably make one of Mulder and Scully next!

More felt kitties

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Well Christmas may be over, but I still can’t get enough of making ornaments out of felt. I think I’ll probably just keep making them all year round because they are so fun! I made two more cats personalized for my friends’ kitties. Here are Rosie, the brown tabby  and A.C. aka Annoying Customer, the slightly peeved-looking and always well dressed model for Kate’s greeting card line. He even has his own blog. I’m thinking I might post a listing on my etsy site soon for personalized cat ornaments.

New projects from this weekend: making felt cat ornaments in the likeness of my cat and my sister’s cat and wrapping all my gifts. I did craft paper with different ribbons.

I find making these felt ornaments really relaxing while watching tv. It also made me feel really wholesome while I watched The Jersey Shore on mtv haha.

The tabby cat is Mabel, my kitty and the black and white one is Fiona, Carrie’s cat. This shows the pattern I created in illustrator.

googly eyed craft coma

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

So my sister and I decided to go to the annual Milwaukee Arts vs Crafts show yesterday. I had never been before and wow I was blown away by the whimsy! There was tons of really amazing handmade work there for sale. Everything from fanciful, feathered headpieces to organic baby wipes. When I wasn’t taking in all the impressive handywork I was being distracted by the often interestingly dressed and tattooed characters behind booths. I bought a really pretty monogram necklace charm and a pair of origami paper covered earrings from NiceLena

I’m not gonna lie though, I was feeling some pangs of jealousy and having thoughts like, “why don’t I have my own greeting card line or know how to screen print things??” or “who has the money and time to do all this anyways!”. So instead of going out last night I decided to make a felt Christmas ornament and watch Elf. My sister and I started making these last year because we both have fond memories of our grandmother’s felt ornaments she made in the 70s, which are soo great. While ours are no where near Arts vs. Crafts level I think they are getting better. Gotta love googly eyes!

Boss!

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I try to make all of my cards I give out. I mean I’m an artist I probably should do that myself rather than shuffle through the fart joke/wacky old lady cards at Walgreens (not that those cards don’t have their place and time!). I put this little design on a card for my boss’s birthday, which also actually lands on boss’s day. Isn’t that convenient?! I thought it turned out pretty cute for the boss with a sense of humor.
